When you press down into a bottle, it dispenses wine or beer seamlessly.

The tube is made from clear, rigid plastic and can be cleaned and sanitized with common wine and beer making solutions.

Sizes of Bottle Fillers

Bottle fillers or bottling wands are available in two primary sizes to suit different needs:

Regular: With a 3/8” diameter and 12 inches in length, this size is ideal for bottling standard wine and beer bottles. It's designed to leave just the right amount of headspace for corks or caps.

Large: A ½” diameter and the same length, this model fills faster but is less controlled, making it better for larger containers like gallon jugs but not for precise bottling.

Both sizes are inexpensive, ranging from $3-$4 USD.

Here’s how to use your bottle filler:

Setup Beverage to be Bottled: Position the carboy or pail containing the wine or beer on a higher surface.

Sanitize Bottles and Prep Bottling Space: Arrange the sanitized bottles about 3 feet lower than the wine or beer. Ensure you have space to move, a small stool to sit on is also nice to rest on while bottling.

Connect Tubing: Attach the tubing from your auto siphon or bucket spigot to the end of the bottle filler.

Sanitize Inside: If you are connecting to a spigot on a fermenter, sanitize before connecting to the tubing. If you are connecting to an auto siphon, connect it first then siphon sanitizer through the device.

Sanitize Outside: Spray the outside with a sanitizer from a spray bottle.

Bottle: Start the siphon or turn the spigot to start the flow of liquid. Take care not to disturb the sediment at the bottom if you didn’t transfer off of it.

Place Bottling Wand in the Bottle and Press Down: Press the bottling wand into the bottles and fill them all the way to the top of the bottle, almost overflowing. Once full remove the filler. There will be the perfect amount of space left to cork or cap your bottle.

Use a Tubing Clamp: A tubing clamp can be helpful if you have to stop bottling and don’t want to lift out the auto siphon. The filler will slowly continue filling a bottle when resting in one even if it is not pressed down. If you’re not paying attention it will overflow a bottle

Do Home Wine Makers Really Need One?

While optional, a bottle filler or bottling wand significantly simplifies bottling. Here’s why:

Ease of Cleaning: If liquid gets into the airlock, the 3-Piece is much easier to clean. You can take it apart and use a brush or paper towel to clean out any residue.

Versatility: If you need a blow-off tube for fermentation, the 3-Piece is perfect. Simply remove the center piece, attach ½" ID tubing to the stem, and place the other end of the tube in a pail of sanitizer to maintain an oxygen-free environment.

Evaporation Consideration: Due to its larger opening, liquid in the 3-Piece can evaporate faster—sometimes in as little as two weeks. If you’re using it for aging, check it regularly to ensure the liquid hasn’t dried up. Otherwise, you risk introducing oxygen, which could ruin your wine or beer.

.

Here’s why:

During Primary Fermentation: The vigorous activity can cause liquid to push up through the stopper and into the airlock. While this won’t harm your wine, the liquid can get trapped inside, making the Twin Bubble hard to clean. If wine residue isn’t rinsed out thoroughly, it can lead to mold, which often means the airlock needs replacing.

During Secondary Fermentation or Aging: Activity is much calmer, so wine is unlikely to enter the airlock. The Twin Bubble’s narrow neck also slows down evaporation of the liquid inside (sanitizer or vodka), meaning you’ll only need to top it off about once every 45 days.

.

Clean and sanitize your hydrometer.

2. Place the hydrometer in middle of jar. It may naturally want to stick to the side of the test jar, so give it a gentle tap to encourage it to move towards the middle of the jar. If you’re testing in the primary fermenter, place the hydrometer near the center and clear away any surrounding bubbles to make it easier to read.

4. With the jar or fermenter on a flat surface try to get your eyes as level as possible with the hydrometer. Note the reading at the bottom of the curve of the liquid surrounding the hydrometer. This curve is called the meniscus and the most accurate reading is given at the bottom. This is your Original Gravity (O.G.) write it down to determine your ABV in a few weeks.

5. After a few weeks have passed and your wine, beer, mead or cider has fermented you will take a Final Gravity (F.G) reading. Repeat Steps 1-4 to take another reading. This time the hydrometer will be much lower due to the absence of sugar and the increase of alcohol in your beverage. Likewise, you may choose to take a reading the first few days after you have pitched the yeast if you think your beverage is not fermenting. Suitable for quick transfers but not recommended for bottling due to the speed and difficulty in controlling flow between bottles.

All sizes are relatively inexpensive, ranging from $10-$14 USD.

Using Your Auto Siphon

While auto-siphon works well for most transfers, it can clog with oak chips or thick hop trub. One solutions is to sanitize a fine mesh bag and place it around the tip of the auto siphon to filter out particulates.

Here’s how to use your Auto Siphon:

Setup Transfer: Position the carboy or pail containing the wine or beer on a higher surface.

Place Receiving Vessel: Arrange the sanitized vessel where you're transferring to about 3 feet lower.

Assembly: Place the inner racking cane inside the wider sleeve, allowing it to slide freely.

Connect Tubing: Attach the tubing to the inner racking cane.

Sanitize Inside: Siphon sanitizer through the device. Place the siphon tip in sanitizer, then pull up and push down on the cane to start the flow. Usually, one or two pumps are enough.

Sanitize Outside: Spray the outside with a sanitizer from a spray bottle.

Transfer: Insert the Auto Siphon into the vessel from which you are transferring, taking care not to disturb the sediment at the bottom.

Place Tubing in the Receiving Vessel: Arrange the tubing end so it will not fall out when you begin to pump.

Start Siphoning: Pump the Auto Siphon a few times until the wine or beer flows freely.

Use a Siphon Clamp: For hands-free operation.

Do Home Wine Makers Really Need One?

While optional, an auto siphon significantly simplifies transferring. It's included in our Deluxe Home Mead, Cider, or Wine Equipment Kit for a reason—it's invaluable for sanitary, mess-free transfers!

Without one you could:

Suck on the free end of the tubing to get the liquid flowing, but this isn’t very sanitary. If you start a siphon this way, you risk contaminating the batch with microbes from your mouth.

Gently lower the tubing into the beer in the upper container so that the tube fills with liquid as you submerge it. Then place your finger over the free end like a straw, put the free end in the lower container, and take your finger off. This is effective in a pinch but can be messy, and you run the risk of disturbing sediment on the bottom of the source vessel.
